A truly remarkable malt from the legendary Speyside whisky masters at Glenfiddich Distillery, the Spirit of Speyside Cooper’s Cask Edition is something to behold.
Capturing the Spirit of Speyside
Speyside is like the Mecca of whisky making, not only to the Scots but to any whisky lover. It is the region most heavily populated with distilleries, many of which are world leaders at what they do.
Not only has the whisky itself been hand crafted at Glenfiddich, but the barrels have been hand made by head cooper Ian MacDonald. For the unaware, a cooper is someone who makes barrels, obviously something very important to the whisky industry.
Spirit of Speyside is a once in a lifetime bottling, made using malts that have been matured in casks made using three different types of oak; refill American oak, ex-Bourbon American oak and virgin American oak. The thought behind the experiment was to see how each of the woods would interact with the whisky and what the final flavour might be.
A mere 460 bottles were produced, bottled at cask strength, from these casks and they were auctioned off in aid of the Disasters Emergency Committee, who work with Ukrainian refugees.
Tasting notes for Glenfiddich Distillery’s Spirit of Speyside 2022 Cooper’s Cask Edition Scotch Single Malt Whisky
The nose is bright and zesty, with lots of citrus fruit, oak wood and sweet nuts. There is a lovely note of toffee and caramel, giving it a nice sweetness overall.
The palate is full of sweetness, bringing in pecans, caramel, vanilla ice cream and tart summer berries. Citrus fruits also continue to come through, alongside some really rich oak notes. The mouth feel is incredibly smooth and well developed.
The finish is bold and sweet, lingering on oak wood and caramel.
There are a lot of good malts out there, many of which are made by Glenfiddich. But this malt goes beyond just good and is truly exceptional. If you can, get your hands on some and truly indulge.
