let’s begin
A champion malt from the relatively young Glen Keith Distillery, based in the Speyside town of Keith.
Distillery Youthfulness
Situated alongside the gorgeous River Isla, Glen Keith is an exciting distillery owned by Chivas Brothers. Compared to the majority of Scottish distilleries, Glen Keith is relatively youthful, having only been built in 1957.
The distillery is just down river from Strathisla Distillery, also owned by Chivas Brothers, but dating back to the late 1700s, so with a bit more history behind it. Despite the age gap, the two distilleries complement each other and often share facilities. This was especially useful when Glen Keith was mothballed and instead was used as a laboratory and research centre for Chivas.
These days Glen Keith is open again and provides malt to Chivas for their Chivas Regal blend, although the odd bottle of a Glen Keith Single Malt is out there. This includes the Distillery Reserve Collection, which is a selection of some excellent Chivas family malts that are exclusive sold at Chivas distilleries.
The Glen Keith bottling is a classic 22 year old single cask edition that has been matured in first fill barrels, giving it a smooth, oak forward flavour profile.
Tasting notes for Glen Keith 22 Year Old Distillery Reserve Collection Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
The nose begins with wonderfully warming notes of apple pie, honey and oak wood. Vanilla custard comes through really well and adds a lovely sweetness to the fruity flavours. It goes perfectly with the dessert qualities of the nose.
The palate is full of rich orchard fruits and oak wood. Vanilla, caramel and honey bring in a brilliant sweetness that complements the fruit flavours perfectly. Hints of peach and apricot also come through.
The finish lingers on fruit and oak wood and rounds off well with a hint of vanilla.
Glen Keith may only be a small distillery in the Scotch landscape, but it is a good one and this release is a definite testament to that.
