Bunnahabhain Introduces Second Release 12 Year Old Cask Strength

Islay’s most remote distillery, Bunnahabhain, has revealed the much-anticipated 2022 release of their 12 Year Old Cask Strength whisky – the second edition in a series which takes inspiration from the distillery’s iconic Warehouse 9.

Distilled on the shorelines of Northern Islay, this bold limited edition embodies and intensifies the true taste of Bunnahabhain’s much-loved 12 Year Old expression. Every year, whisky lovers from around the world complete the journey to Warehouse 9 to sample drams straight from the cask, but the distillery knows not everyone can make the pilgrimage to Islay. This release gives people around the world the chance to experience a dram straight from the cask for themselves.

A deep russet gold whisky, the release is matured in first and second fill Oloroso casks to create a whisky which is rich in colour and flavour, bursting with intense dried fruits and warm cinnamon spice.  It shows the balance of the spirit and the cask wood, but in a more concentrated form, with the mouthfeel and texture of the whisky increasing.

Presented at 56.6% ABV, the undiluted cask strength whisky is best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to encourage more floral scents, followed by caramel and vanilla on the palate.

Bunnahabhain’s Master Distiller Brendan McCarron said, “We’re really proud of this exceptional release, which is a perfect encapsulation of our most celebrated expression. Not all whiskies work at cask strength and many don’t stand up to full maturation in sherry casks but Bunnahabhain is different.  This release really is Bunnahabhain in a bottle and gives people unable to make the trip to the distillery the chance to enjoy the Warehouse 9 experience wherever they may be.

This second release is of course similar in many ways to the first, as we follow the same classic recipe of unpeated Islay spirit in Oloroso. The latest expression is richer in sweet chocolate and red fruits on the nose and carries a spicier finish delivering bigger, richer and fuller flavours of Oloroso sherry that Bunnahabhain drinkers have come to know and love.”

Bunnahabhain, pronounced ‘Bunn-na-ha-venn’, is situated at the end of a small single-track road at the most northerly point of Islay. The remote distillery has become world-renowned for its unpeated malts, going against the grain of the whisky which the island is usually recognised for.

The 2022 edition 12 Year Old Cask Strength whisky can be found at specially selected whisky stores worldwide and on the Bunnahabhain website from October, with an RRP of £80, https://bunnahabhain.com/.
