An evolution of the Ballantine’s ‘Artist Series’, the True Music Series gives uncompromising artists an innovative platform to share and visualise music, transforming the Ballantine’s Finest and 12 Year Old blends into true works of art. It follows previous collaborations with album cover designer, Leif Podhajsky and music photographer, Dave Ma.

Reeps One is a multi-disciplinary phenomenon. His early performances alongside Damon Albarn, Mike Patton and Squarepusher sparked his explosive experimentation, unearthing a desire to push the human voice to new heights.

He has successfully bridged the gap between audio and visual communication, redefining the role of phonetics as a creative outlet, generating conversations between the artistic, musical and scientific communities which led to him building an audio visualiser – a speaker containing liquid, illuminated with coloured lighting – which creates artistic visualisations caused by the vibrations passing through the liquid as music is played.

These dramatic audio visualisations have become synonymous with the AV experience during his live shows and using this same technique, Reeps One has created three stunning artworks for the Ballantine’s Limited Edition collection.

To create the artworks, Reeps One produced an original track, Surfaces, and played it through the audio visualiser which contained Ballantine’s whisky to produce a series of distinctive sonic patterns and bring to life the Ballantine’s Finest and 12 Year Old expressions in a way never seen before.

The images were shot in macro and capture the dynamic geometric patterns as the whisky moved and changed with the frequency variations in the track, transitioning from the smooth, circular ripples as seen on the Ballantine’s Finest sleeve, right through to the intricate patterns that are depicted on the Ballantine’s 12 Year Old tin.

Whisky has a different viscosity to water so, when I added Ballantine’s to the audio visualiser, it behaved in a totally unique way, creating these beautifully complex and chaotic patterns, which made the creation process all the more exciting.”
