Patrón Tequila Range Review

let’s begin

Patrón Tequila is bringing class and quality to the spirit category.

Mexican roots

Hailing from Jalisco in Mexico, Patrón Tequila know their roots. They are proud of their history and traditions that have gone before them, choosing to honour this as part of their story.

While they are a luxury brand, there is definitely a sense of craft and small batch artisanal distilling at their heart.

A lot of their processes have been used in Mexico for centuries. Their Hacienda (which translates as a ranch or plantation in English) is also very traditional and honours the history of Tequila distilling.

How they do things at Patrón Tequila

Patron are meticulous about their production processes. They start by growing their agave plants for eight years then when they have harvested the hearts of the agave, they are baked in a brick oven.

From here the Distillery uses both modern and traditional methods to grind the hearts. This involves a stone mill and a Tahona wheel, which is made from volcanic rock and can weigh up to two tonnes.

The resulting liquid is fermented for two days and then distilled in copper pot stills. After this a portion of the liquid is placed in barrels to be aged while some of it is bottled straight away in Patròn’s hand made bottles.

Patrón has a core range of four expressions. These are some of the best Tequila you will try. They really live up to the luxury label

How they do things at Patrón Tequila

Patrón Reposado

Bottle cost: £53.95

The first in the line up is Reposado, a premium tequila that has been rested for 3-5 months before being bottled.

Various casks were used in maturation including American oak, Hungarian oak, French Limousine and French allier oak. This has given it a bold flavour profile.

The nose beings with hints of agave and citrus fruit. Lemons and limes add a nice tart edge and make this perfect for cocktails.

The palate is intense and has big notes of agave, honey and a hint of fresh cut grass.

This is a really refreshing Tequila and the oak wood is well developed. It adds a nice edge to the overall flavour.

It finishes with a dash of honey and fruits.

Patrón Anejo Tequila

Bottle cost: £59.75

Next we have the Patrón Anejo Tequila which has been aged in casks that include French limousin, new American oak, second fill American oak, Hungarian oak and French allier oak.

It has matured for 12-15 months and has a sweet, fruity flavour.

The nose begins with ripe cantaloupes, oranges and dew covered grass

On the palate this grows into warming oak, sweet vanilla and a dash of dried fruits.

There is a delicate hint of caramel and a little honey to go with the orchard notes. The sweetness is subtle but really well done.

This is a brilliant Tequila for enjoying on its own or as part of a cocktail with agave nectar.

The Gran Range

A branch of its core range is the Patrón Gean Range. This consists of two bottling including the Gran Patrón Piedra, which is an exceptional tequila. It stands out particularly well and is a great addition to the Patrón Range.

The Gran Range

This Tequila has been ages for four years in French Limousin and new American oak barrels. The extra ageing really brings out the character.

It is referred to as an extra anejo Tequila and is packed with flavour.

The nose begins with citrus fruits and oak wood. The wood is sweet and delicate, with a lovely elegance to the flavour.

The palate is full of notes of charred oak and fresh fruits, giving it a really lovely sweet, zesty flavour.

Gentle notes of herbs and caramel, with hints of agave and earthy mushrooms also appear.

The finish lingers on oak wood and caramel.

This is a Tequila unlike any other you’ll have tried before so we definitely recommend going out and grabbing a bottle.

Grab Patrón Burdeos

Bottle cost: £495

The second in the Gran Range is the Burdeos, which has been matured for 2 years in ex-Bourbon barrels and French Limousin casks before being finished for 12 months I. Bordeaux barrels.

The nose boosts red wine and sweet agave notes. The acidity of the wine goes perfectly with the tart citrus fruits and hints of oak that come trough

The palate is really rich and fruity. More wine notes appear with soft caramel and vanilla.

Dried fruits and a dash of marzipan round everything off.

The finish is full of oak wood and wine.

Patrón Tequila are a really exciting distiller, with an interesting story and lots more brilliant tequilas to come.
