let’s begin
An impressive age statement from one of Ireland’s leading distilleries, Bushmills 30 Year Old is an exquisite malt.
American Dream
Made using new American Oak casks, Bushmills 30 Year Old is the oldest age statement in the distillery’s Causeway Collection. It has been released with a very limited run, at only 432 bottles in total. The first 100 of these were released in 2020 and the remainder will be released in 2021.
The 30 year old malt has an intriguing maturation story, one which is new to Bushmills. This malt spent its first 14 years of life in ex-Bourbon barrels and Oloroso Sherry butts, before being transferred to fresh American Oak casks for the next 16.
The mix of flavours has made this into a gem of a whiskey. Helen Mullholland, Master Blender at Bushmills said, “It’s a privilege to work with such rare whiskeys in The Causeway Collection. This 30 Year Old New American Oak Cask, our oldest single malt to date, is a truly special Irish single malt. Maturing it for 16 years in the new American oak casks has allowed the sweetness to gradually soften, making it creamier and velvety smooth in texture. I love its tropical fruit notes and hints of spiced coconut alongside the warm and reassuring wood notes.
“I’m immensely proud of how we’ve been able to create such sensational waves of flavour in a 30 year old whiskey. Like the whole Causeway Collection, it’s a celebration of our passion for single malts, our rare and unique casks and our 400 years of whiskey-making heritage.”
Tasting notes for Bushmills 30 Year Old New American Oak Single Malt Irish Whiskey
The nose opens with a warming note of nutmeg and oak wood. There are lots of spices and lovey vanilla and honey note. Pineapples and bananas also appear.
The palate is smooth and mellow with big fruity notes and lots of oak wood. Vanilla, caramel and coconut give it a lovely sweetness. There is a delicate hint of chocolate as well.
The finish lingers on oak wood and vanilla.
At 30 years old it would be hard to wrong with this malt but Bishmills do the age statement perfectly. It is smooth and gentle but packed with flavour. Well worth exploring for a great example of an older Irish malt.
