let’s begin
A rare ex-Bourbon release from the world renowned Glenfiddich Distillery, this is an exquisite malt with lots of flavour.
Background
Glenfiddich Distillery has been around since 1887 and is situated in the Speyside region of Scotland.
They are one of the best selling brands across the globe and are steadily increasing sales.
They have become well known for their innovation, especially with the recently released Experimental Series, which is exactly what it sounds like.
This series includes expressions such as IPA Experiment (matured in IPA barrels), Project XX (blended from 20 specific barrels) and Winter Storm (matured in ex-Icewine barrels).
All very intriguing malts that are capturing new audiences and enthralling veteran Glenfiddich fans alike.
The Malt
Bottle cost: $38.50 – $99.99
Glenfiddich are also looking to create new drams, and their 14 Year Old Bourbon Barrel Reserve expression is a great take on their classic malt.
Typically Glenfiddich uses Sherry casks, but with this malt, Brian Kinsman, Master Distiller, has decided to use ex-Bourbon barrels, imparting a sweet note.
They are matured for 14 years in these barrels, before being transferred to deep charred new American oak barrels, sourced from the Kelvin Cooperage in Louisville, Kentucky.
This dram opens with a nose that is full of orchard fruits and thick, sweet caramel. Apples, pears and citrus fruits abound, offering a delightful tang against the sweet caramel backdrop.
The caramel has a lovely vanilla aroma to it that also brings out an oak wood flavour. These all tie in wonderfully.
The citrus fruits really start to reveal themselves on the palate. They are zesty and juicy. The oranges, grapefruits and lemons are all tart and give a nice bite to this dram.
The oak wood of the nose also becomes sharper and more present on the palate. It starts to peel away and make itself known against the saccharine caramel of the nose.
It has a thick mouth feel and a creamy vanilla taste that combines perfectly with the oranges and lemons.
The finish is bold and lasting, with lots of caramel and toffee.
This is a spectacular dram, packed with flavour and intrigue. Not one to miss, even if it means flying to America to get it.
