March, 2026 was an important month for Johnnie Walker fans in America, as it saw the brand release its first permanent expression in over a decade. In fact, the last time the brand with the striding man put out a permanent expression, was way back in 2011.
Now, as you may be able to tell if you’re a fan of the GreatDrams blogs, we’re fans of Johnnie Walker here. If you want a selection of solid, dependable, high-quality drams that cater to different demographics and whisky fans, you won’t go far wrong with Johnnie.
For Johnnie Walker drinkers, particularly those who are also partial to a fine bourbon, their newest blend to make the permanent lineup should tick all the right boxes. The blend in question is known as Johnnie Walker Black Cask, and is produced to appeal to drinkers with a sweeter tooth. It is aged exclusively in ex-bourbon casks and is described as being a fresh and exciting take on their classic Black Label, with more of an emphasis on the popular tasting notes you get from bourbon.
Here are my thoughts on their newest permanent expression.
A Trio of Exceptional Drams from Exceptional Distilleries
Designed to help offer the best of both worlds when it comes to Scotch and bourbon whiskey from America, Johnnie Walker Black Cask is the handiwork of Dr. Emma Walker, the Master Blender over at Johnnie Walker.
Dr. Walker crafted this particular dram from a blend of single grain and single malt whiskies which were drawn from Johnnie Walker Black Label. In order to craft this exceptional spirit, Dr. Walker specially selected the highest quality, most characterful and complex whiskies from the Black Label blend. The whiskies used were drawn from three distilleries:
- Glen Elgin Distillery
- Roseisle Distillery
- Cameronbridge Distillery
While similarities will naturally be drawn, the Black Label blend typically features drams which have been matured in seasoned European oak casks. European oak casks typically impart spicier, nuttier, more tannic notes into the whisky. European oak is also more porous and provides a courser grain, which enables the whisky to penetrate deeper into the wood, and take on more of the oak’s character.
Black Cask, however, really emphasises the notes and character you get in bourbon, which largely comes from the American oak casks. These casks feature a tighter grain and have a higher vanillin content, which imparts more sweeter vanilla notes, particularly after the charring process, which is a mandatory legal requirement during bourbon production. The charring process really helps to concentrate those sweet vanilla, honey, toffee, and maple syrup notes we’ve come to expect from bourbon. It also gives the whisky a brilliant dark colour. As the grain is tighter, the spirit inside is also exposed to less oxygen.
As Black Cask is aged exclusively in ex-bourbon casks, the final result is a blended whisky which really embraces the nuances, character, flavour, and tasting notes you get from bourbon. For those looking to bridge the gap between bourbon and Scotch whisky, this could very well be the ultimate dram to do so.
A Blended Scotch for Bourbon Drinkers
As you have probably gathered, the objective of this particular dram was to produce a blended Scotch with more prominent bourbon notes.
The use of 100% ex-bourbon barrels helped to impart more of a sweeter profile than that imparted by their European counterparts. Black Label also ordinarily features an age statement. With Black Cask however, that is not the case. Rather than highlighting the age of the whisky, this expression instead emphasises the cask. If you’re looking for examples of that old oak wisdom I love to talk about so much, look no further. Again, it shows the magic of wood.
These Kentucky barrels, coupled with the whiskies from different distilleries, really helps to give Black Cask a unique flavour profile. It’s as if they’ve taken all of the very best flavours and notes from both Scotch, and bourbon, and combined them together in one. The end result is a whisky that takes the heart and soul of Black Label, but dulls them down and sweetens them ever-so-slightly, delivering a slightly mellower flavour profile, with a few surprises along the way.
As well as the sweet vanilla, honey, toffee, caramel, and maple syrup notes, a portion of the whisky contained within this blend is also lightly peated. This, coupled with the charred bourbon casks helps to infuse a gentle smokiness into the blend, without being too overpowering. It’s lingering in the background, rather than being at the forefront like you might expect with an Islay expression. The smoke serves more as a seasoning than a flavour profile. It’s the equivalent of adding a smoked cheese to your cauliflower cheese mixture. The smoke flavour is there, but it’s subtle and helps emphasise the other flavours, rather than stealing the show.
Black Cask Tasting Notes
Okay, so we know we can expect more of a bourbon influence in this dram, but how does it taste?
Here are a few tasting notes, along with other info which you may find interesting.
On the nose, you get vanilla and caramel right away, along with notes of mixed spice, creamy porridge, dark chocolate honeycomb, buttery shortbread, and toasted marshmallow. There is also a hint of woodsmoke.
On the palate, vanilla ice cream, peach cobbler, toffee apples, and salted caramel flavours are immediately present. These are then joined by chocolate orange, smoked salted pretzels, dark chocolate coated roasted coffee beans, maple syrup, and coconut upside down cake.
The finish is medium in length with that 43% ABV providing a fantastic warmth as it slips down the throat. There’s a hint of burnt orange and campfire embers, sea salted chocolate caramels, marshmallow cereal drenched in cold milk, and honey roast peanut brittle.
Johnnie Walker Black Cask recently rolled out across America, though as yet, there are no details about when we can expect to see it here in Europe, though it shouldn’t take too long.
