Ardbeg is one of those drams that is just synonymous with Scotland. If you think of peated, smoky whisky from Islay, Ardbeg is almost certainly one of the first names that instantly springs to mind. Considering they’ve been putting out exceptional drams for centuries now, that’s hardly surprising.
Ardbeg is universally revered, and if you’re a fan, you’re most definitely A FAN! So much so, in fact, that they even have a loyal international fanbase known as the Ardbeg Committee. Being a member of this prestigious fanbase not only gives you bragging rights over those peasant-like non-members, it also offers a wealth of other perks, including exclusive access to unique, special-edition bottlings.
When Ardbeg first released their best-selling, award-winning 10-year-old, members of the Committee pondered the possibility of a cask-strength release. As time passed by, interest in a cask-strength edition grew further, and before long, fans were desperate to see it come to fruition. Never ones to disappoint their loyal customers, Ardbeg granted them their wish by unveiling a cask-strength release of their classic 10-year-old single malt whisky.
But does it live up to the hype or are Ardbeg fans going to be left with a bitter (and smoky) taste in their mouths? Here are my thoughts on the Ardbeg 10 Year Old Cask Strength.
A Smoky Icon
I’ve looked at Islay quite a bit over the last year or so, so I won’t go into enormous detail about this gorgeous, rugged, isolated whisky region. What I will do however, is go over the basics for any newbies here on the GreatDrams blog.
Islay is a remote Scottish island situated just south of Jura on Scotland’s Inner Hebrides. In fact, the region is referred to as the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’. It is one of Scotland’s five (recognised) whisky regions and is renowned for creating strongly peated whisky.
Whisky produced by distilleries on Islay tends to taste unique, like nothing created anywhere else in Scotland. Drams produced here typically have coastal, briny, medicinal, iodine, earthy, and smoky notes. This is largely attributed to the climate and coastal environments in which the whisky is produced and matured in, and the use of peat during the malting process.
Ardbeg in particular, are well known for their use of peat and it really shows in their drams. Ardbeg whisky typically features prominent notes of smoke, with plenty of salty, citrussy, coastal flavours, and a gentle medicinal undertone.
Without question, the most popular and iconic expression released by this distillery, which is now more than two centuries old, is their 10 Year Old. If somebody were to ask me for a dram that represents everything there is to know and love about Ardbeg, it would be this, their flagship dram and a smoky icon. Well, now it’s available for a short-while only, as a cask-strength, and I have to say, I’m intrigued.
Ardbeg 10 Cask Strength Edition
Any diehard Ardbeg fans amongst you may very well be aware that this is technically the second time that Ardbeg have released a cask-strength version of their flagship dram. Back in 2003, Ardbeg released a cask-strength very limited-edition for the Japanese markets (though the whisky released then was not the same as the whisky released now).
At the forefront of this cask-strength release is of course Dr. Bill Lumsden (who else?), who made a solemn oath to create a memorable and historic version of this flagship malt in honour of Ardbeg’s loyal fans making up the fan club.
To craft this release, Dr Lumsden selected a variety of very unique casks. Just like with the standard 10-year-old, ex-bourbon barrels were used, though some were actually used for experimental purposes and filled with new make spirit which was undiluted straight off the stills at strengths of around 70% ABV.
As you might expect, this whisky has some bite and clocks in at a ferocious 61.7% ABV. Compare this to the regular Ardbeg 10, which comes in at 46% ABV, and you can see why they’re really emphasising the cask strength elements here. It’s safe to say that Dr Lumsden doesn’t do things by halves.
On the nose, you of course get those unmistakable Islay notes of bonfire smoke, earthy peat, mint, fresh horseradish, peppercorns, and sea salt. These are joined by BBQ creosote, burnt orange peel, grated lemon zest, and wet beach pebbles on a rainy winter’s day.
On the palate there’s not as much burn as you might expect. Don’t get me wrong, at close to 62% ABV it’s there, but somehow, it’s nice and mellow. There’s honey, baked cinnamon buns with cream cheese and vanilla frosting, candied citrus peel, and autumn baking spices. Gradually, these flavours fade and are met with smoked oak, heather, peat moss, oak-smoked pulled pork, lemon balm and thyme, stewed autumn fruits, and strawberry, basil, and balsamic glaze.
The finish is incredibly long and rewarding. It has an amazing mouthfeel that’s not too oily and not too cloying. This is where those famous Islay medicinal notes come into play. There’s a hint of menthol and iodine, combined with peppermint, honey, stem ginger, and orange peel, with just the right amount of tobacco smoke and leather. A subtle spiciness, perhaps reminiscent of hot honey? Maybe. There’s a definite tingle on the tongue.
Overall, this dram, which is a gorgeous golden straw colour, strikes the perfect balance of sweet, savoury, spicy, medicinal, and smoky. It’s not a smoke bomb, nor does it feel like drinking pure molten lava. It’s a complex dram with hidden layers, plenty of depth, and enormous character and body. If you enjoy Ardbeg’s flagship dram, you’re almost certainly going to love this.
This highly limited release is said to be a one-time deal, so once it’s gone it’s gone. Released especially for members of the Ardbeg Committee, it became available on February 24th 2026, exclusively at Ardbeg.com, with a small selection of bottles available for those lucky enough to brave the weather and visit the distillery in person.
