let’s begin
Hand selected by Adnams own Head Distiller, Distiller’s Choice 6 Year Old Barrel Number S001 is a brilliant Single Malt, full of character.
English Whisky Revival
Adnams have been brewing in Southwold for centuries, with a history that can be traced back to 1345. Beer and ale runs in their blood and they are experts in brewing. It only made sense that in 2010 they opened their Copper House Distillery to try their hand at distilling.
They started off with gin and soon realised the potential of their spirit. Eventually they began ageing their spirit into whisky and it was quick to pick up awards after release. Since then they have expanded their range and have some really lovely malts to their name.
With the Distiller’s Choice range, Head Distiller John McCarthy has personally chosen, nosed and tasted each cask to ensure that only the best are bottled. This 6 Year Old is the first release in the series and is aptly labeled Barrel Number S001. There are a mere 303 bottles in this release, so it is definitely worth getting your hands on it while you can.
The malt itself has been matured for just over 6 years in first fill Oloroso sherry casks, giving it a lovely warmth and spice.

The nose begins with herbal notes of fennel and liquorice and is packed with lots of fruity flavours. Dried fruits also come through, with lovely homely spices that add a warming edge. There is a faint hint of vanilla and oak wood as well.
The palate is smooth and delicate. It is full of sweet nuts, vanilla, oak wood and caramel. The sweetness goes perfectly with the tangy fruit peels, raisins, sultanas and cinnamon that are also there.
The finish is bold and filled with lots of sherried spice and dried fruit.
This is a brilliant start to what appears to be a promising series. Adnams haven’t been in the whisky distilling game too long but they are certainly creating some great malts.
