If you’re a fan of Irish whiskey, and in particular, are a fan of Bushmills Irish whiskey, 2023 is a great year for you.

In early 2023, Bushmills opened their second distillery, the aptly named Causeway Distillery, and in celebration, released two truly stunning tipples. We know that there are a lot of buzzwords being thrown around in the world of whiskey, but when we say ‘stunning’ we really mean it.

Bushmills, which originally is home to the world’s oldest licensed distillery, decided to open their second distillery a mere stone’s throw away from their first location. The name is in honour of the legendary ‘Giant’s Causeway’ which is also not too far away.

The Causeway Distillery has a distinctly sleek and shiny look like you would expect with any new building, yet at the same time if somebody told us it had been there for more than a century we’d believe them.

For such an exciting and special building then, it requires exciting and special whiskies, and that is precisely what the 25 and 30 year old Irish whiskies are.

The Causeway Distillery

Costing a reported £37 million, the new Causeway Distillery from Bushmills is certainly proving to be a huge hit in the intricate world of whiskey.

Created as a result of a £60 million investment from owners Proximo Spirits, the Causeway Distillery was built primarily out of necessity. Before the new building was constructed, Bushmills were limited on space and were running out of space in their warehouse.

The expansion resulted in more warehouse space, better resources, and close to half a million barrels of whiskey currently maturing.

The 39,000 square foot space has enhanced material usage by 10%, while reducing their energy emissions by as much as 30%. It has allowed Bushmills to go from producing a very impressive 5 million litres of whiskey each year, to a staggering 11 million litres. With bigger wash stills in the Causeway, that’s hardly surprising.
