Singleton of Auchroisk 1975 Whisky Review

When it comes to best-sellers for drinks giant Diageo, The Singleton is most certainly up there.

What’s especially unique about this brand, is the fact that, depending on where in the world you happen to live, you’ll get a different brand. Those in Asia for example, will enjoy The Singleton of Glen Ord. Whereas those in Europe will enjoy The Singleton of Dufftown.

Those who know their whiskies, or who just have a great memory, will also know that, way back when, there used to be an Auchroisk single malt, though that brand was sadly discontinued. The brand may no longer be about, but you can still find rare and exceptional bottles of their single-malt whisky. The Singleton of Auchroisk 1975 for example, is harder to find than a trustworthy politician, but they are out there, you just need to know where to look.

Distilled in 1975 and bottled when the whisky was still referred to as Auchroisk Single Malt, likely around the late 80s or early 90s, this is a very special whisky indeed.

Auchroisk Distillery

Located in Speyside, Banffshire to be precise, and currently owned by Diageo plc, the distillery was founded in 1972 on the site of Dorie’s Well. Here, the water was found to be of exceptional quality and produced a truly special Scotch whisky.

Initially, the distillery marketed their single malt under the Auchroisk name, though in 1986 the single malt underwent a rebranding as people believed that Auchroisk would be too difficult for people outside the locality, to pronounce. To make life easier, it was rebranded as ‘The Singleton’.

In 2001 the name was reverted back to ‘Auchroisk’, though in 2008 it would be once again rebranded, this time to ‘The Singleton of Auchroisk’.

Okay, now that we’ve had a wee history lesson and have discovered that the brand has had more name changes than Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs, it’s time to get to the real good stuff and to get your mouth salivating as we talk about the whisky itself.

This a very collectible, rare vintage single malt Scotch whisky, that was likely bottled in the late 1980s or early 1990s after being distilled in 1975. Owning this is owning a piece of history.

The whisky, which is 40% ABV, has a vibrant caramel colour that it has picked up from the Sherry casks it was matured in.

On the nose you should quickly be able to detect notes of straw and hay, coupled with blood oranges, honey, figs, and a touch of milk chocolate.

On the palate, the whisky is fairly sweet and quite loose, offering baked apple and cinnamon flavours, more honey, black treacle, chestnuts, and figs.

The finish is fairly short and smooth, with caramel and honey notes coming through, with the slightest whispers of oak.
