Found beside the gorgeous River Arun, Stopham Vineyard is an award-winning vineyard that specialises in white wine.

Origins

It was first started by Simon Woodhead, who was originally an automotive sensor designer for TAG McLaren F1.

He discovered his passion for wine making and studied Viticulture at Plumpton Agricultural College, going on to start Stopham in 2007.

From here the vineyard has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the most well respected wine producers in Britain and even having their wine served to the Queen and Prince Philip at their golden wedding anniversary.

Types of Wine

Stopham primarily makes white wine, using a variety of grapes, including Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Bacchus. The vines are harvested by hand and the team at Stopham have a lot of passion for what they do.Stopham also make sparkling white wines and rosé.

Woodhead himself is Winemaking Director and has a lot of drive and determination to see his vineyard succeed. Considering the accolades he has received so far, he seems to be doing alright!

Protected Designation of Origin

It was this passion and determination that drove Woodhead, alongside other Sussex wine producers, to seek a Protected Designation of Origin for English wine.

This means it is recognised by the European Union as protected and specific to that region. Products such as Stilton cheese, Melton Mowbray pies and Cornish clotted cream also have this status, with Sussex wine joining them in 2016.

There has recently been a boost in interest in English wines, so it is unsurprising that they have been given this protected status.

The market for English wines such as the ones Stophammake, is growing year on year and shows no signs of slowing down.

Take a Look

Stopham is a wonderful estate with plenty to show, whether you are interested in wine or not. They offer tours from April to October.

Set in the glorious South Downs National Park, the vineyards are stunning and well worth a visit. They were planted by a specialist German planting team that used lasers to ensure the vines were placed at specific distances.

As well as the vineyards, there is also the grade II listed Victorian barn where the winery is held. Here you will everything you need to know about wine making, and even get the chance to taste some incredible wines.
