Ad Gefrin Tácnbora Cognac Cask Review

When you think of Northumberland, what are some of the first images that spring to mind? For some, they think of ancient castles, the ruins of monasteries, weather-beaten cliff faces, rugged-yet-beautiful coastline, and some of the most scenic countryside in the world.

Ask people to name an alcoholic tipple associated with the region, and mead would probably be the most common answer. I’m a big fan of mead, and whenever I’m in the area I always pick up a bottle. Today, though, we’re going to be looking at another type of booze produced here, and this one isn’t made from honey. Yep, as you’ve probably guessed, it’s whisky.

In recent years, we’ve been hearing a lot of great things about this Northumberland distillery, and as they prepare to release their first single malt in 2026, I thought for today’s review I’d look at a blended dram of theirs that I’m very excited about, Ad Gefrin Tácnbora cognac cask finish.

A Distillery Steeped in Anglo-Saxon History

I’m a bit of a history buff. Not only when it comes to the history of my beloved whisky, but also the history of our country. I must admit, this is one of the main reasons why I found myself gravitating towards Tácnbora.

Ad Gefrin is a distillery very much in its infancy. It was founded officially in Northumberland, back in 2023 and specialises in whisky and gin. What I’m really liking about the distillery is that it focuses on using local ingredients grown, harvested, and produced in and around Northumberland. They’re also very sustainable, which is something else we here at GreatDrams are very passionate about.

The distillery, which also serves as an Anglo-Saxon museum showcases this stunning region’s history and takes its name and design inspiration from a 7th century palace, once owned by King Edwin of Northumbria, located at the foot of a twin-peaked hill situated close to the River Glen, known as Yeavering Bell. It stands proudly a mere stone’s throw away from where this ancient palace once stood.

Ad Gefrin Tácnbora Cognac Cask Finish Whisky

In 2023, Ad Gefrin launched a limited-edition peated Islay cask whisky which proved a huge hit. So much so, in fact, that it quickly sold out. Well, now they’re back, with a brand-new limited-edition cask strength expression.

Tácnbora Cognac Cask Finish Whisky is the perfect example of what can be done when Ireland and Scotland come together in England. The whisky is a blend of Irish and Scottish whiskies, finished off in Northumberland for a further six months in oak casks which were once home to premium quality Cognac

The name Tácnbora is derived from Old English and roughly translates to ‘standard bearer’. This is a symbolic tip of the hat to the distillery’s royal inspiration, as the standard bearer would be in charge of leading royal processions.

Non-chill filtered, and bottled at a cask strength of 58.6% ABV, this dram has a gorgeous golden hay colour to it. Those additional six months in the ex-Cognac oak cask really helped to impart a gentle sweet and fruitiness to the dram, with spicy undertones and a complex mouthfeel.

On the nose you get plenty of sweet notes, with honey and butterscotch aromas being the most prominent. These are joined by creamy, malty notes. Think custard cream biscuits dunked in milky tea and you’re in the right area. There’s a subtle woodiness on the nose as well, with hints of pipe tobacco, leather, and lavender.

On the palate, dried fruits dominate. If you enjoy a fine brandy or Cognac, you’ll love the taste right from the start. There are strong fruity notes of apricots, prunes, dates, and figs, along with lightly toasted vanilla and cinnamon sugar. An additional sip should quieten down the fruity notes somewhat, and it is here with the richness shines through. Jam roly poly and vanilla bean custard flavours are present here, as well as orange zest, Cornish clotted cream fudge and baking spices.

The finish is sweet and lengthy and offers notes of creamy malt, tart gooseberry compote, heather honey, and lightly charred oak.
