As you probably know, when it comes to whisky here at Great Drams, we most certainly don’t discriminate. One look in my drinks cabinet will prove this, as I’ve countless whiskies, not just from across the UK, but from all over the globe as well.
Some days I’m partial to a fruity Speyside expression, whereas others I’m in the mood for a spicy American rye. I do have to say, though, that for as long as I can remember I’ve been a massive Islay whisky fan. I don’t just enjoy the peaty, smoky notes we’ve come to expect from an Islay, I love the maritime influence imparted by the local terroir, the complexity of the whisky, and of course, I love Islay itself.
Being as fortunate as I am to do what I do, I’ve found myself in Islay plenty of times over the years. Every time I visit, I’m literally awestruck. It’s an absolutely stunning whisky region in Scotland and is a must for any whisky fan.
When staying in Islay, other than the weather, the main issue you’ll face is finding the right accommodation. Planning a whisky tour across Islay takes a lot of planning, but finding the right accommodation just got a whole lot easier.
To help make your whisky tour of Islay unforgettable, here are a few recommendations of places to stay that get the Great Drams seal of approval.
More About Islay
Before we take a look at where to stay on Islay, let’s first learn more about this gorgeous whisky region in Scotland.
The Isle of Islay, pronounced ‘eye-lah’, is located on western Scotland, and is commonly referred to as Scotland’s ‘Whisky Coast’. The isle is home not only to some of the finest whisky distilleries in the world, but also some stunning coastline, amazing landscapes, relaxing sandy beaches, gorgeous views, fantastic wildlife, and some of the freshest, most delicious seafood you’ll ever taste! See? I told you I was a fan.
Islay is currently home to 10 working distilleries (including Port Ellen), which are:
- Caol Ila
- Ardbeg
- Bowmore
- Ardnahoe
- Port Ellen (Islay’s newest distillery, founded back in 1825, closed down in 1983, and reopened again in 2024)
- Bruichladdich
- Bunnahabhain
- Kilchoman
- Lagavulin
- Laphroaig
There are also several other distilleries on Islay, set to become operational in the near future.
Whisky produced on Islay is very distinct, as characteristically it is often peaty and smoky. That isn’t to say that all whisky produced on Islay meets these criteria because it doesn’t. Chances are however, that if you taste a peated single malt, it was produced on Islay.
Where to Stay on Islay
With an estimated population of around 3,228, according to Google, this inner-Hebrides Isle is cut off from the mainland, which means if you plan on travelling by car, you’ll need to take the ferry. Then of course, it’s down to you to decide on where to stay.
Where you stay will depend not only on things like budget and transport, but also on which distilleries you plan on visiting. To help make your stay that little bit easier, here are four suggestions that should prove very handy.
Up first, we have Ardbeg House, which looks set to be a real game-changer when it comes to whisky tours of Islay.
Formerly known as Islay Hotel, Ardbeg House was purchased by LVMH, (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey) the owners of Ardbeg, back in 2023. Since then, it has had a substantial amount of money put into it and has undergone extensive renovations. The results? Well, they’re spectacular.
Located on Port Ellen, Ardbeg House is the perfect base for your tour as there are four distilleries easily accessible by foot, cycle, or taxi. These include:
- Port Ellen
- Lagavulin
- Laphroaig
- And of course, Ardbeg
The hotel is now open for bookings, but is not set to open until autumn 2025. It features 12 themed rooms and suites, along with a bar, courtyard, and restaurant. Here you’ll be able to enjoy all manner of delicious beverages, including of course, plenty of whiskies produced right on the doorstep.
If you want to be in the heart of Islay, so as to explore the entire region, Bowmore is the perfect destination. Don’t let the fact that there is only one distillery here put you off, as all the others are only a stone’s throw away (okay, maybe a little further, but still very close).
As you can guess by the name, if you’re looking to visit Bowmore Distillery, Bowmore Distillery Cottages literally couldn’t be any more convenient, as they’re located on the site of the distillery itself. If you’re a fan of the smoky, peaty, honeyed, lightly salty notes synonymous with Bowmore whisky, this is your dream location.
Consisting of 6 self-catering cottages of varying sizes from one bedroom to six bedrooms, you’ll find all the amenities you could ever want, and more besides. The cottages have all been recently refurbished to the very highest of standards and provide a beach and a pub nearby. That’s along with a distillery literally next door.
Located in Bridgend, in a semi-rural location on a farm, you’ll find Skerrols House.
Skerrols House is a guest house comprising of 7 luxury rooms, all furnished to the highest of standards. It’s the perfect location to visit all of Islay’s distilleries, with the owners even offering to book whisky tours on your behalf.
Your stay will include a full cooked breakfast, (other options are available) along with other amenities such as free wi-fi, Sky TV, fresh linen, and plenty more besides.
The nearest distillery is Bowmore, which is just a 10 minute drive or taxi away, though the rest of the island’s distilleries aren’t much further away. If you enjoy the countryside and animals, you’ll love it here.
Another Place, The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links
Finally, for anybody who enjoys two of life’s biggest pleasures – whisky and golf, we’ve got Another Place, The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links.
Situated in Port Ellen, this gorgeous contemporary hotel comes complete with 42 premium-quality rooms, family lodges, and suites, along with its very own links golf course.
Nestled along the shores of the Atlantic, the hotel is a short distance away from a number of prominent distilleries in and around Port Ellen, making it the perfect location for those who enjoy the finer things in life. You’ll find a bar and restaurant, outdoor sauna and hot tub, a screening room, and even an art collection.
For those who enjoy walking, the hotel is the perfect starting point for the Three Distilleries Pathway – an easy 9.7km walk where you can explore Islay’s rolling hills and scenic coastal views, as well as visiting Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg distilleries. You could also include a visit to Port Ellen Distillery, though that would mean changing the name of this walk (which will likely happen as Port Ellen Distillery becomes more established).
Not keen on walking back, or if you’re too sloshed on delicious whisky to face the walk, there is a bus service, as well as plenty of taxis.
