The Macallan Edition No 4 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Review

let’s begin

A lot has been said recently about how The Macallan mostly releases their 'good stuff' in far away lands with very little being allocated to the UK, but with another superb expression in the Edition Series; The Macallan are churning out great quality drams with this collection. Why don't they do this with their regular range?!

The Macallan Edition No 4 Single Malt Scotch Whisky

This is more than just another series of malts matured at different ages.

The Macallan Edition Series brings together a mix of truly innovative collaborations and great cask combinations, with the aim of making great Whisky. They are pushing the boat out with this one, and making some of their best malt along the way.

The Macallan Edition No 2 Single Malt Scotch Whisky brought together Master Whisky Maker Bob Dalgarno and the four Roca brothers, who together own the El Celler de Can Roca restaurant.

The Whisky was made to reflect the characters of the people who created it. the finished result is brilliant and has been made from seven oak casks, from four different bodegas.

The Macallan Edition No 3 Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a collaboration between Dalgarno again, and Master Perfumer Roja Dove.

This dram is all about the nose. Dove was brought in to nose samples and give a distinct description of each. The descriptions were then used to build a Whisky that is balanced and complex.

The flavours are perfect, working in harmony to create one of the best drams Macallan have released.

But the Whisky and the series as a whole represent something so much bigger in terms of Macallan’s innovation and collaboration. Through these drams they’ve proved why they are the top of their game and will be staying there for a long time.

The Macallan Edition 4 Single Malt is another excellent malt. It doesn’t have the same “phenominality” of the Edition 3, but it is still an incredible malt in its own right.

It has been made from European and American oak casks and is a celebration of craftsmanship and innovation at The Macallan.

Tasting notes for The Macallan Editon No 4 Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Bottle cost: £128

The nose opens with robust notes of honey and orchard fruits. Oak is immediately present and bolsters the smooth, sweetness with a lovely wooded note.

Citrus fruits take over, with oranges, clementines and limes. They are lovely and zesty, adding a nice layer over the sugary sweetness of the honey.

The palate is equally as bold. More oak wood comes out, with vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. The spices bring in warmth and a homely feeling that brings the body to life.

Orchard notes abound, with dew covered grass and apple blossom. It is refreshing and crisp alongside the apples. The mouth feel of this dram is really intense and smooth. It allows all the flavours to be experienced and the texture is very intriguing.

The finish is full of oak and vanilla. The sweetness lingers for a while and is luxurious and elegant.

The Macallan Edition 4 Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a brilliant expression, with deep flavours and lots of complexity.

The Edition Series represents a new and exciting page for The Macallan and we thoroughly recommend trying them all now if you haven’t already.
