let’s begin
I met Serghios, the editor of Irish Whiskey Magazine whilst at a tree felling with Irish Distillers in Dublin and the joy in his eyes and how he spoke about his new baby, the first dedicated Irish Whiskey Magazine, was impressive. A few days later he posted me a copy to take a look, here’s how I got on.
Now, I’m a massive fan of Irish whiskey, it is a mutual passion of both myself and my father-in-law, Tom, and is one of the many ways we have bonded over whiskey over the years, culminating in his last birthday present request being a weekend with me in Dublin to check out the Teeling Irish Whiskey Distillery and the Old Jameson Distillery. Needless to say my mother-in-law and wife were less than impressed the he wanted a weekend away with me instead of them, so we all went. It ended up being one of my favourite weekends of 2016.
I am also involved with a Northern Irish distillery, Boatyard Distillery, which recently won a Design Master Award from The Spirits Business.
So when this magazine arrived, I was excited, and could not wait to dive in.
What struck me first was the quality of the cover and paper stock, really high quality and it felt premium to hold, the vibrancy of the key cover image too was fantastic.
Irish Whiskey Magazine rides the resurgent wave Irish whiskey is experiencing at the minute with loads of distilleries opening, consumers finding themselves more engaged and new, wonderful expressions are coming to the market thick and fast.
The brilliant design follows through, although it can be confusing at times with articles in the magazine being advertised in the magazine, but that is quite literally the only thing I found that was not great. I enjoyed reading the Irish history interlaced with whiskey and its own journey, as well as quirky smile-raising features that opened my eyes to a few things I had not even considered about Irish whiskey.
It was nice to see features including hot topics like mixology, whiskey tourism, women in whiskey and the support of Peter White of the Irish Whiskey Society, who gave a fascinating interview.
All in all, a fantastic first Irish Whiskey Magazine from Serghios and his team, I wish them all the luck in their venture and know they will be successful; let’s hope the Irish whiskey brands get behind him too. Already looking forward to the next issue… make sure you subscribe!
