The dram has all of the telltale smoothness of a classic Irish whiskey, with the sherried sweetness of the Oloroso casks.
This is a very exclusive and difficult to get bottle, owing to the fact that there are of course nearly 5,000 “friends” who must certainly be first in line. But it is well worth searching for and getting your hands on. Redbreast are one of the finest whiskies in the Jameson family of brands and 16 years of maturation has really hit the sweet spot with this expression.
The nose opens with big notes of dried fruit and sherry. It is warming and gentle to begin with and fills out with aromas of malted grains and summer berries. There is a hint of sweet nuts and cinnamon spice.
The palate is rich and smooth. More malted grains appear, alongside oak wood and crisp orchard fruit. Sherry takes over, bringing in lots of dried fruit, and cinnamon and nutmeg spices. There is a soft sweet vanilla flavour throughout.
The finish lingers on oak wood and sherry spices, with a lovely dash of dried fruit.
The Redbreast 16 Year Old Oloroso Sherry finished Single Pot Still Whiskey is an exquisite dram. It is brimming with flavour and has all the qualities of the best Irish whiskies.
