Described by the Great Taste Awards judging panel, who awarded this product a 2-star Great Taste award, which means judges dubbed it above and beyond delicious, as having “remarkable smoothness for its ABV. Rather extraordinary and hugely sippable. A surprising whisky, well deserving of its two stars”.

You asked, and we listened. Back by popular demand we have this remarkable ex-bourbon single grain, single cask whisky from the Lowlands.

Whisky from this particular region typically has heaps of character, with floral notes, sweet, sugary, and fruity flavour and aroma, and a very smooth finish. It’s the perfect introduction to Scotch for people who are lucky enough to be just discovering this beloved spirit.

Hailing from the industrial chic Girvan Distillery, this dram of ours received a lot of praise and a lot of positive feedback, particularly for its ‘boozy butter’ description and its complexity. It didn’t matter which tasting event or whisky award evening we attended, we always seemed to get the same positive feedback from our buyers.

Girvan is one of the Lowland’s newer distilleries. It’s a hit with whisky lovers and tourists alike. It was constructed back in 1963, and saw its first spirit running from the stills on Christmas Day. Interestingly, the stills at the distillery were designed by a farmer who worked part-time for the distillery purely because he had a passion and fascination for whisky. He sounds just like the type of person who’d fit right in on the GreatDrams team.

Because it was such a hit, we knew we had to bring it back, so off we went to source another cask from the same batch, from the same distillery, distilled on the same day, in the same style of ex-bourbon casks. We did, however, tweak the spirit slightly, and matured it for an additional 3 years more than the original Scottish malt whisky. Was this tweak worth it? You bet it was. The result was a ridiculously smooth whisky with a rich, boozy buttery finish with the perfect balance of fruity aromas and flavour.

Aged for 14 years, there are plenty of rich, creamy, buttery, butterscotch and toffee notes here, tied together beautifully with vanilla and dried fruit to offer the perfect balance of sweet and richness. This is a dram that makes the ultimate neat serve, and is impossibly smooth on the palate. It may have an ABV of 48.2% but I’ve honestly had liquors that have been rougher than this. This is the perfect sipping whisky and is so easy to drink. I dare you to try and stick with just one!

Single cask spirits are amongst the rarest releases in the whisky industry, due to the fact that they cannot be repeated exactly. They are not blended and are considered to be the purest, truest representation of a distillery’s character that you can get. This is evident more than ever, in this stunning 14 year old whisky.
