The final release in The Wall Collection honours the historic sherry cask journey to Islay by sea, with limited-edition hand-painted bottles that capture the spirit of 1980s craftsmanship and coastal influence
Islay, August 2025: Introducing The Wall Rope Edition 39-Year-Old
– the second chapter in The Wall Collection series, a tribute to the perseverance, passion, and distinctive character that make Laphroaig what it is today.
Aged for 39 years, The Wall Rope Edition is a rare whisky shaped by the journey of sherry casks to Islay via the puffer boats that once supplied the island with essential materials from coal to barley.
At its heart, this whisky celebrates the vital relationship between land and sea. The influence of the coast – so intrinsic to Laphroaig’s DNA – fills this whisky with energy and character. Matured in Oloroso sherry seasoned European oak hogsheads and finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry seasoned European oak butts, this expression is a mix of bold peat smoke, maritime salinity, and rich sherry sweetness.

Rich tawny in colour, the whisky brings aromas of toffee, cranberry, dark red cherry, polished leather, sweet molasses, and mandarin orange. The taste reveals a gentle smokiness woven with treacle toffee, candied orange peel, and hazelnut. The finish is long, smooth, and warming, leaving lasting impressions of smoked orange toffee, oak, and mixed spice.
Limited to just 200 bottles globally, The Wall Rope Edition is a collector’s piece both in spirit and design. Each bottle is hand-painted, numbered, and signed by acclaimed London-based illustrator and ceramicist
Laura Carlin, whose work draws inspiration from Islay’s rugged shoreline and the tarred rope that secured the vital cargo. Using the exact paint that adorns the lettering on Laphroaig’s iconic Warehouse No.1, Laura captures the symbolic journey and enduring legacy of Laphroaig’s sherry casks.
Calum Fraser, Master Blender at Suntory Global Spirits, said: “With The Wall Rope Edition, we set out to capture the rich influence of sherry casks on Laphroaig. We wanted to honour their journey – travelling by sea, weathering the elements, and finally
reaching Islay. This whisky holds that story. After 39 years, it’s layered, bold, and unmistakably Laphroaig.”
Daryl Haldane, Private Client Director, added “The Wall Collection is a rare chance to taste a defining moment in Laphroaig’s history. Created in the 1980s – a time of big changes for the distillery – The Rope Edition was shaped during major renovations
that brought new life to our stillhouse. Production slowed, but the spirit of Laphroaig held strong. What came from that time is a whisky full of depth, character, and resilience. It’s a true part of our heritage. And now, we look forward to sharing it with
the friends who’ve stood by us through every chapter.”
This 39-Year-Old is created from some of the last spirit from a chapter inspired by old-style Laphroaig from its early years. It follows on from the second edition in the Archive Collection, continuing to honour Laphroaig’s history and the skilled pioneers
behind its story.
Each bottle of The Wall Rope Edition 39-Year-Old is priced at an RRP of £4,950 / $ 5,500/ €5,800 (France), €5,700 (Germany). Friends of Laphroaig have the first opportunity to buy this special whisky via an exclusive sale on 25th August. From 28th August it
