let’s begin
Matured in double charred barrels, this is an exceptionally tasty whisky from one of the world’s favourite brands.
Rising to the top
Having started all the way in 1827, Ballantine’s have a long history in whisky making and blending. They had a humble start, having been sold as a blend from George Ballantine’s Edinburgh based grocery store. This was not an uncommon story for blends, and other brands have similar beginnings.
Today, they are one of the world’s most loved and enjoyed whisky brands. It is a testament to the quality blended whisky they make. Especially since they are competing against blended Scotch whisky brands like Johnnie Walker (who remain on top with Ballantine’s not far behind).
Ballantine’s Barrel Smooth Blended Scotch Whisky
To stay on top (or at least near the top) the brand has to be innovative and fresh, and they certainly show those characteristics with their new Barrel Smooth Blended Scotch Whisky.
This blended Scotch has been matured in double charred barrels, meaning it has been able to really get into every nook and cranny of the barrel. The extra leel of char means more tannins are produced and this in turn results in a sweeter flavour profile with plenty of vanilla notes.
THE HIGHBALLTASTING NOTES FOR BALLANTINE’S BARREL SMOOTH BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY
The nose begins with notes of oak wood, vanilla and caramel. It is excellently sweet. Honey and caramel seep through the wood, making it rich and complex. There is also a slightly darker note to the dram, with hints of liquorice and mahogany.
The palate is warming and homely, with big notes of smoke, fruit and toffee. It is chewy and incredibly smooth. You can taste every inch of the oak cask. Smoke wafts throughout, with apples and cherries appearing. There is a creaminess to the mouth feel that brings back the honey of the nose and amps up the smoky notes.
The finish is strong and warm. It is full of oak wood and smoke. There is a hint of vanilla and caramel to finish on a delightfully sweet note.
Ballantine’s Barrel Smooth really lives up to its name. The smoothest Scotch whisky blend you’ll likely ever meet.
