let’s begin
An impressively aged new release from Diageo’s Glen Ord Distillery, The Singleton 38 Year Old is a glorious dram.
Grab it while you can
Released as a limited edition, meaning there are only 1,689 bottles in existence, this is a Scotch you’ll be wishing you could add to your whisky cabinet. The process of crafting it involved taking 12 year old malt and maturing it in Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso Sherry casks for a further 26 years.
At an awesome 38 years old, the age statement alone is pretty imposing. It has been created using only eight casks of whisky from the Glen Ord Distillery, based in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. Owned by Diageo, Glen Ord is not the most commonly known distillery, but it is certainly a gem in their crown.
Master of Malts at Glen Ord, Maureen Robinson, had this to say about the new release, “The Singleton 38-year-old was crafted during an era that was very exciting at The Singleton – a time of flavour experimentation an innovation across our whisky-making. Selecting new American oak casks was very new for us at the time at the distillery and we decided on a lengthy secondary maturation to continue to unlock the decadent layers of flavour in this single malt.
“I remember tasting cask samples just three years into the secondary maturation and I was struck how even at such an early stage, we could identify the richness of flavour the new casks had presented. To mature those casks for more than two decades further was an exploration of how it is possible to unearth exceptional flavour within whisky, and it feels a real privilege to now share this truly delicious single malt with the world.”
Tasting notes for The Singleton 38 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Highland Whisky
The nose begins with fresh, crisp apple notes accompanied by exotic fruits like mango, apricot and pineapple. It has a slightly tart edge but this goes perfectly with the fruity sweetness. There is a dash of caramel and oranges in there too.
The palate is very dessert-like, with baked apple pie, caramel sauce and cinnamon. Malted grains with a hint of oak wood appear. Sweet spices add a lovely warmth and depth overall. Toffee, vanilla and more caramel abound throughout.
The finish is lingering and has a lovely peppery spice, with more apple and oak wood.
This is a very fine dram indeed. You’ll be one of the lucky few if you can get your hands on it, but if you do, you’re in for the treat of a lifetime.
