An excellent release from Glendronach, who are breathing new life into their Revival range.

THE BRAND

The distillery has a history dating back to 1826, when it was first opened by James Allardice, who was renowned for his business skills.

For decades, the distillery made Whisky without interruption, until 1996, when they were mothballed. They opened again in 2002 and later sold to BenRiach in 2005, who remain the owners today.

They maintain a lot of the traditions that they used to, still handcrafting their Whisky after all these years.

The Glendronach Revivial 15 Year Old

This release is a new iteration of a 15 Year Old that they stopped producing in 2015, hence the name Revival. It has been matured in Pedro Ximenez and oloroso Sherry casks sourced from Andalucia.

TASTING NOTES FOR THE GLENDRONACH REVIVAL 15 YEAR OLD

Bottle cost: £62.95

The nose opens with lots of sweet almonds and cherries, with a hint of marzipan. The sweetness is inescapable but the layers add a lovely depth to the overall flavour.

Underneath it a bitterness comes through, with coffee and dark chocolate, which bounces off a sweeter tang of citrus fruits and more sweet nuts. Hazelnuts and pralines make it rich and well rounded, packing in flavour.

The palate expounds on these, adding dried fruit and caramel. it is elegant and luxurious and the heat of the sherry can really be felt. The mouth feel is wonderfully smooth, bringing in the feel of the caramel and a hint of honey.

Almonds and cherries come back in and really make themselves known, going hand in hand with the caramel and honey.

The finish is thick and sweet, with a dash of sherry and honey to end.
