There are some things in life that simply cannot be ignored, experiences that you just have to do. Whether it’s bungee jumping off a cliff or going to every one of your team’s matches, there are things we just have to do in life.

The same principle applies to tasting Premium Scotch; there are some drams out there that you just have to try. These are experiences in themselves, which might not make sense to a non-Whisky drinker, but to those of us who appreciate a good malt; we get it.

1. Glenmorangie Signet

Bottle cost: £155

The Signet was created using Glenmorangie’s most exclusive and oldest malts. This is top of the line premium scotch. It won Whisky of the year in 2016 and lives up to the title. The flavour is incredible and signifies a lot of effort from Bill Lumsden, the distillery’s Master Distiller. It opens with citrus fruit and burnt caramel sweetness. This leads into cinnamon spice, sweet nuts and bitter coffee. The malt is wonderfully complex and brimming over with flavour.

2. Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2011

Bottle cost: £49.75

An exploration into provenance and terrior, Islay Barley is a brilliant malt with a rich origin and a palate to match. The barley used in this dram, as you may have guessed, was entirely grown on the isle of Islay. The nose begins with lots of oak and malted grains, with big notes of citrus fruit. The palate is packed with peat smoke and coastal flavours of sea salt and brine. There is a gentle floral note as well, with hints of heather.

3. The Macallan 25 Year Old Sherry Oak

Bottle cost: £1500

The Macallan is one of the best Scotches around and this 25 Year Old, matured in Sherry casks is one of the best examples of what they do. The body is rich and elegant, with big notes of spice, caramel and oak wood. Every flavour is well developed and smooth. You will not taste a more perfect malt anywhere. This is premium scotch as it should be.

4. The Dalmore 18 Year Old

Bottle cost: £110

A simple amazing malt, the Dalmore’s 18 Year Old definitely has to be on your Whisky bucket list. It has been matured in American oak and Matusalem sherry casks before being finished in Sherry butts. The spice is warming and homely, offering a really rich feel from the nose into the palate. There is an excellent thick vanilla and oak flavour that really brings it all to life. This is combined with dried fruits, oranges, dark chocolate and a luxurious oily mouth feel.

5. Old Pulteney 25 Year Old

Bottle cost: £380

This is a great coastal malt that will speak to anyone who loves seaside flavours in their drams. The award winning malt has been matured in American oak and Spanish oak casks. It is full of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and lots of dark chocolate. There is an oaky note on the palate, which develops into sweet vanilla and caramel. Sea salt and brine, with waxy notes and a lovely earthy flavour abound, complementing the sweet notes perfectly.
