let’s begin
Merging two of the giants in the Whisky market, Chivas Regal’s Mizunara matured Blended Scotch brings together Scotch with Japanese production methods.
Bringing Together the Best
Scotch has long been known as the best Whisky in the world, but its biggest challenger is definitely Japanese whisky. We’ll not mention that many critics believe Japanese whisky to be better than Scotch, that’s for another time. So anyway, the Chivas Regal Mizunara matured blend brings together these two competitors in perfect harmony.
For the uninitiated, Mizunara is Japanese oak and it is sometimes used in Japanese distilling to mature malts. It is not commonly used as the wood is hard to come by, difficult to mill and can be very porous, resulting in a lack of stability in casks.
It gives this blended Scotch whisky a light body and introduces characteristics such as floral and honey notes.
Chivas Regal Mizumara is a celebration of the two types of whisky produced in each country. it was first available in 2013, exclusively on the Japanese market, but has now reached the UK, to great applause.
It is typical Chivas style blended Scotch whisky, with lots of fruits and sweet notes, but the Mizunara brings in a soft floral flavours, with hints of sweet nuts.
Tasting Notes for Chivas Regal Mizunara Blended Scotch Whisky
Bottle cost: £45.75
The nose begins with lots of soft, floral notes, apple blossom and almonds. It is sweet and delicate, a really gentle dram but still packed with flavour.
Caramel and toffee also appear, with a lot of spice and fruit.
The palate bursts with apples, pears and oranges, giving it a lovely zest. The spice becomes real heat and adds a wonderful depth to the overall flavour.
Vanilla oak and thick, creamy caramel come through. There is also a cake like note, with vanilla sponge and buttercream. It is mouth wateringly good.
The Mizunara notes of blossom and honey come together with the fruits and sweet flavours. They are excellent together. The big, bold notes of caramel and vanilla are really enhanced by the softer floral flavours.
The finish is slightly spicy, with hints of fruit and more floral notes.
Thank goodness they brought this to the UK, because it is a brilliant whisky and really does combine some of the best features of both Scotch and Japanese whisky.
