The Glenturret, Scotland’s Oldest Working Distillery and Custodians of Small-Batch, Hand-Crafted Whiskies, Announce the Release of the 2022 Core Collection

Scotland’s Oldest Working Distillery, The Glenturret, has announced the release of their core collection for 2022: five signature whiskies that embody the distiller’s ethos of small batch, hand-crafted whiskies, with an exciting new addition of a 7 Years Old. These are joined by two genuinely scarce single malts, a 25 Years Old and 30 Years Old, that personify the 259-year heritage of the distillery, which has always placed provenance, prowess and passion at the heart of its whisky creation.

The collection has been crafted by The Glenturret’s award-winning Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno, and follows the much-acclaimed 2020 maiden release and 2021 range, which have received numerous awards since being introduced in July 2020.

The first five whiskies in the 2022 collection are made up of Triple Wood, the 7 Years Old Peat Smoked, which makes its debut this year, 10 Years Old Peat Smoked, 12 Years Old and a 15 Years Old.

Triple Wood is a sweet and spicy yet soft whisky, matured in American and European oak sherry seasoned casks alongside Bourbon barrels. The final liquid has an alluring golden colour and a delightful, subtle character. Last year’s edition won several Gold medals, including the recent Spirits Business Scotch Whisky Masters 2022.

A new addition to the core range, and inspired by the beautiful, rugged landscape that surrounds The Glenturret distillery, is the 7 Years Old Peat Smoked. American oak sherry seasoned casks build sweetness from the new make spirit, whilst delicate refill casks deliver the abundant smoky notes.

Peat has always featured heavily in The Glenturret’s distilling history, with records showing that peat was originally sourced from the mosses at the distillery’s water source. The 10 Years Old Peat Smoked celebrates the varying sources of peat now procured to create our peat smoked whiskies, with smoke flavours constantly evolving and changing through time. This peated spirit style is matured in both first fill and second fill European and American oak casks resulting in a complex single malt that commands a higher strength of 50% ABV. A favourite of Distillery Manager Ian Renwick, last year’s 10 Years Old Peat Smoked has won several gold medals at international spirits competitions and was recently awarded the sought-after Masters Medal at the The Spirits Business Scotch Whisky Masters Competition 2022.

Sitting proudly at the heart of the 2022 range is the 12 Years Old, created by carefully selecting fewer than 60 casks before being crafted by hand. American oak Hogshead casks drive a dessert-like sweetness in the elegant liquid, whilst European oak layers the dried fruits and spices leading to a full,
rich single malt.

The fifth whisky in the 2022 core collection is the 15 Years Old, where the influence of time has become more prevalent. The impact that this time has on flavour, and the high percentage of European oak used to craft this expression, changes the direction and depth of character, leaving a complex whisky laden with dried fruits and spices. The 15 Years Old 2021 release is now sold out so collectors will be keen to get a hand on a bottle of the 2022 edition.

Joining the five new expressions in the 2022 collection are two rare and genuinely scarce single malts, that are being released in highly restricted numbers. The first is the 25 Years Old, limited to just 210 bottles and produced from only three casks, each with a very different character. Two European oak Butts and one refill Hogshead form a partnership that illustrates the benefits of long maturation, and the skill that goes into assembling such differing whiskies. The result is a fruitful and rich canvas of flavour that elegantly balances both intense and light notes on the palate. Coveted by collectors around the world, the 2021 25 Years Old sold out in less than one month after its release, and the 2022 expression is expected to have a similar appeal.

The final expression in the 2022 release is a spectacular 30 Years Old, with just 750 bottles available. The liquid is derived from a selection of the rarest casks found in The Glenturret’s traditional Dunnage Warehouses. A Niepoort Portuguese oak cask drives the tropical flavours found in this single malt. This incredible cask is over 100 years old and the dark port, which it once held, has developed a mesmerising warm ruby hue visible in this remarkable whisky. European oak sherry and Moscatel casks further enhance the 30 Years Old’s abundant rich characteristics whilst refill casks allow an array of fruit to make several welcome appearances. Speaking about the evolution of the 2022 release, The Glenturret’s Whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno said, “Continually building on the relationship between our whisky drinkers and The Glenturret, the 2022 Release
introduces more American oak influence this year and our new 7 Years Old Peat Smoked.”

Managing Director John Laurie adds that “For centuries, The Glenturret have been producing some of the finest, small-batch single malts by hand. We are so proud to have built a team who are true experts in the traditional production techniques we employ, and who share our values of passion, prowess and provenance. It means that each year we release a new collection, we can build on the year before and release single malts that are even more special than the previous year. We hope our customers will enjoy the new 2022 range as much as we do, especially now that we have added a new expression.”

The new Glenturret range will be available at select retailers and distributors and online at www.theglenturret.com from July 21st, 2022.
