let’s begin
Part of the core Tamdhu range, their 15 Year Old is an excellent Speyside malt.
History
William Grant & Sons, one of the biggest and most well known producers od Scotch, first set up Tamdhu in 1897.
They’ve been in the game a long time and despite changing hands a number of times, they know exactly what they’re doing.
Today they mostly sell their own malts but for a long time, when they were owned by the Edrington Group, Tamdhu Whisky was used in blends such as Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark.
So if you’ve ever tried those malts, you’ll know Tamdhu must be pretty good.
They are now owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, who took them out of a long period of being mothballed.
New beginnings
With a new owner, the distillery has really taken on a new lease of life in recent years.
And with that has come a new range of single malts and special releases.
They have some brilliantly thought out ranges, including the Batch Strength range and some limited edition Distillery Manager specials.
They are well worth exploring, and their core range represents some pretty spectacular malts.
The 15 Year Old in particular stands out. It has been matured in Oloroso Sherry casks and the flavour is intense.
It opens with a nose of toasted oak wood, mangos, strawberries and oranges.
The aroma is sweet and fruity, with a gentle hint of herbs in the background. Summer berries and crisp apples are especially present.
The palate is rich with fruits flavours. More summer fruits, apples, pears, lemons and oranges all come together to create a really bright flavour.
Marzipan and pastry also comes through and adds a little bit of depth overall.
Vanilla and charred oak round everything up and add a nice foil to the sweetness of the fruits.
The finish is bold and lingers on oak and caramel.
The 15 Year Old is a highlight of the Tamdhu range and a good malt to experience the quality malt that they make here.
