The second edition in a new series of bottlings by That Boutique-y Whisky Company celebrating the Balcones distillery in Texas.
A Modern Collaboration
Both Balcones and That Boutique-y Whisky Company are very modern companies that target a new audience of drinkers.
Balcones Distillery is based in an old welding shop in Waco, Texas, the very same welding shop that their stills were made in. As a craft distillery, they have done well in the recent boom in interest in the American whiskey market and are well known for their innovation.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company are similarly innovative and have been embraced by a younger generation of drinkers. They have a very particular image, created by unique labels for each bottle with a comic book aesthetic. The labels are often humourous and engaging.
Now, they have come together to create a new bottling of Balcones spirit. This is the second batch of Balcones to be bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company and is an excellent addition to the range.
Bottle cost: £58.29
This is a very unique whiskey, having been aged for three years in a tequila cask. It is limited to only 212 bottles.
The nose opens with notes of caramel and tart summer berries. You can definitely taste the rich agave and “vegetal” notes of the tequila coming through. There is a refreshing note that is full of herbs such as basil and mint. A gentle smoke wafts throughout.
The palate is full of orchard notes of dew covered grass, oak wood and apple blossom. More herbs appear with a hint of thyme and pepper spice. Limes and marzipan, with more smooth caramel and a final note of vanilla round it off well.
The finish lingers on tequila and lime, with dashes of vanilla.
This is a bfull of citrus fruitsrilliant bottling by That Boutique-y Whisky Company, and a fantastic whiskey by Balcones. We’re very thankful the two decided to come together.
