Three Ridings Debuts: A New Yorkshire Single Malt Whisky Revealed through a Four-Part Documentary of Regional Collaboration

A new English single malt whisky, Three Ridings, has been unveiled today, marking the arrival of a distinctive Yorkshire voice in the fast-emerging world of English whisky. The launch is accompanied by a four-part documentary series that traces the whisky’s creation, from land and people to process and philosophy, offering a rare, transparent look at how a modern single malt is made.

Rooted in Yorkshire and shaped by collaboration rather than convention, Three Ridings takes its name from the historic East, North and West Ridings of the county. Together, they
represent a place defined by resilience, craft and quiet pride, qualities that sit at the heart of the whisky itself.

The launch marks the public debut of both the brand and its story. Rather than beginning with tasting notes or technical claims, Three Ridings introduces itself by showing how and why it was made and the people who came together to make it differently.

A STORY WORTH TELLING

The four-part documentary series follows the collaboration between three Yorkshire makers: a maltster, a brewer and a distiller. Each episode explores a different chapter in the whisky’s
creation, from barley and fermentation to distillation, maturation and the shared belief that flavour should always come before efficiency.

Produced in Yorkshire and filmed across Castleford, Masham and Ellers Farm in Stamford Bridge, the series reveals a process rarely seen in modern whisky-making: open
collaboration across disciplines that usually operate in isolation.

Chris Fraser, Founder of Ellers Farm Distillery said,
“Our whisky journey began over three years ago but uniquely draws on over 200 years of experience in growing, malting and brewing Yorkshire grown barley. Three Ridings didn’t
start with a marketing brief. It started with the question — how do we make the best possible single malt in Yorkshire that can stand alongside the very best in the world?”

Ricky Gervais, Co-owner of Ellers Farm Distillery said,
“I love working with people who care more about doing something properly than doing it quickly. Three Ridings is the result of the pursuit of excellence, and I am very proud of what
we have created.”

BORN OF THREE MAKERS

At the foundation of Three Ridings is Fawcett & Sons, malting barley in Castleford since the 1800s. The fermentation and brewing expertise comes from Theakston in Masham, where
brewing has shaped community and culture for nearly two centuries. Distillation, maturation and blending is led by Ellers Farm Distillery, the modern Yorkshire distillery known for its
progressive approach and commitment to sustainability.

In the relatively new world of English whisky, Three Ridings draws on over 200 years of experience in malting and brewing Yorkshire grown barley to enable Ellers Farm to create
the best possible single malt from Yorkshire. Together, they discovered that there isn’t just one way to make whisky.

Simon Theakston, Chairman of T&R Theakston Ltd. said,

“The development of Three Ridings Single Malt whisky has been a wonderful adventure, shared with our supremely talented partners, Ellers Farm Distillery and Thomas Fawcett & Sons, building on our near two hundred years of brewing the finest Yorkshire beer here in Masham. Developing the ‘wash’ for a new malt whisky is a natural extension of what we do every day and will enable us to extend our reach into this new and exciting market. We could not be any more proud than we are of our association with Three Ridings Single Malt Whisky”

MADE FOR FLAVOUR, NOT SPEED

Three Ridings uses English whisky’s creative freedom to focus obsessively on flavour. Heritage varieties of barley and flavour driven malt and roast selection. Fermentations that are deliberately long, building texture and complexity. Distillation is tuned to soften rough edges without stripping away character. Maturation takes place in primarily in carefully selected ex-bourbon American oak casks, chosen for what they contribute, not what they cost.

There is no colouring, no chill filtration and no shortcuts. Every decision is made with transparency and intention.

As John Ruskin wrote, “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort.” That belief underpins every part of Three Ridings.

A MODERN YORKSHIRE SINGLE MALT

The result is a whisky that will be shaped by Yorkshire itself — honest, smooth and full of character. Three Ridings is rooted in tradition but not bound by it. Where heritage offers
wisdom, it listens. Where convention limits flavour, it looks further.

The launch documentary series is available from 3 March 2026 across Three Ridings’ digital channels, marking the beginning of the brand’s journey — and an open invitation to follow it.

Three Ridings First Release will be released for sale later this year, but people can secure one of the 1,000 individually numbered First Release bottles through the purchase of the Evolution Collection on the Three Ridings website.
