— A NOTE FROM GREG & KIRSTY —

Strathmill is a Diageo distillery. You will not often see it as a named single malt. When we found a 10 Year Old with a genuine smoky thread in a first-fill bourbon cask, we didn’t overthink it, we jumped at the chance to own it.

TASTING NOTES

NOSE

Bright and approachable. Orchard fruit first, then soft vanilla and the characteristic honeyed malt you’d expect from a quality Speyside. It’s welcoming without being bland. Then, underneath, almost a surprise: a clean thread of wood smoke that lifts everything. Not peat. Not iodine. Smoke, the kind that comes from the grain itself and the cask, not from the kilning process.

PALATE

The fruit comes forward. Green apple, a little pear, the vanilla from the first-fill cask now richer and more buttery. The smoke integrates rather than dominates, which is the difficult thing to achieve and the reason this cask stood out. Honeyed malt threads through the middle and holds the whole thing together.

FINISH

Clean and moreish. The smoke lingers just long enough to give the finish character without outstaying its welcome. This is a whisky that makes you reach for the glass again. At 48.2% the warmth is present but not aggressive.

THE RIGHT BOTTLE IF…

You drink Speyside regularly and you’re ready for something that does something unexpected with the style, this isn’t a departure, it’s an evolution

You’ve been told you’d enjoy peated whisky but Islay feels like too big a leap then this is the bridge; classic Speyside character, genuine smoke, nothing that bites

You want 333-bottle rarity with approachable flavour, a lot of limited editions are challenging for a reason but this one isn’t, it’s just rare because that’s all there is

WHY THIS CASK

Strathmill is one of those distilleries that almost exclusively feeds the blending industry. The name appears occasionally on an independent bottling and then disappears again. The smoke in this cask was unexpected. Strathmill isn’t known as a peated distillery, which made it interesting rather than off-putting. First-fill bourbon at 10 years with a natural smoky character is unusual enough to act on. We bottled 333. That is the entire output of this cask.

THE DISTILLERY, HONESTLY

Strathmill sits in Keith, Speyside, and produces spirit that is quietly excellent. It doesn’t have Glenfiddich’s marketing budget or Macallan’s mystique. It just makes good whisky that mostly ends up in blends, which means it rarely gets credit for what it actually is. Single cask releases from here are uncommon. Smoky ones are genuinely rare.

THE CASE FOR THIS BOTTLE

Greg & Kirsty’s argument for why this cask earned its place in the range.

POINT 1

A smoky Speyside in a first-fill bourbon cask at 48.2%, non-chill filtered, natural colour, 333 bottles total… That’s a specific thing that doesn’t come around often

POINT 2

The smoke here isn’t added or manipulated, it’s part of the spirit’s character and that’s different from a peated expression, and from a smoky finish; it’s what the cask and the distillery produced together over 10 years

POINT 3

48.2% is a considered bottling strength, high enough to carry flavour, moderate enough to drink without mandatory water – this is whisky as it wants to be drunk

YOUR FIRST POUR

Neat, and give it time, the smoke integrates as the whisky opens… pour it 10 minutes before you intend to drink it and the balance shifts noticeably

A small amount of water draws out the vanilla and softens the smoke, this is the move for anyone who prefers their smoke quieter

Serve to a Speyside drinker without mentioning the smoke first, watch when they notice it
