3 Fabulous Whisky Distillery Train Tours

It’s always special when you get the chance to visit Scotland’s many whisky regions and distilleries. No matter how many times I go, if it’s the same distillery, or even the same whisky region, it’s just as special as the last.

Scotland’s whisky heritage is incredibly well-documented. Each region offers its own unique take on whisky, with its own climate, scenery, and terroir. There’s so much to do in fact, that cramming it all into one day just isn’t possible. In fact, one trip would be a challenge.

if you’re looking for a way of taking in all that Scotland’s distilleries and whisky regions have to offer, while sitting back, relaxing, and watching the gorgeous landscapes and scenery pass you by, a whisky distillery train tour could be ideal. Which is what I’m going to talk to you about today.

If you’re thinking of touring some of Scotland’s distilleries and want to enjoy the spectacular landscapes in the process here are 3 of the best whisky distillery train tours.

7-Night Scotland Whisky Trail by Luxury Train and Taste of Edinburgh

If you’re looking for a whisky-related holiday in the heart of Scotland’s whisky trail, this 7-day luxury train trip abord the Royal Scotsman is ideal.

Featuring luxury accommodation onboard the train in your very own spacious luxury cabin, this trip will provide you with the opportunity to sample some of the finest drams in the country.

During the trip you’ll get to enjoy private tours of 3 whisky distilleries and even partake in your very own cask whisky tasting experience overseen by your own private whisky ambassador. There’s 5-star food and drink on board, luxury accommodation in Edinburgh, 24-hour stewards, and a visit to the prestigious Rothiemurchus Estate.

You’ll travel through mountains, over lakes, through forests, through rugged Highland vistas, towns, villages, cities, and heaps more besides. Oh, and as if that wasn’t enough, there’s even an on-board spa so you can pamper yourself between whisky tastings.

Speaking of the whisky, along with on-board tastings and various other experiences, you’ll also visit a number of famous distilleries, including Speyside’s own Glenlivet, along with Tullibardine Distillery, overseen by the master blender.

Belmond Train Royal Scotsman 4-Night Scotch Malt Whisky Tour

Sticking with the incredibly luxurious Royal Scotsman train, if 7 nights is too much, how about embarking on a 4-night Scotch malt whisky tour instead?

Honestly, I can’t put into words just how luxurious and decadent this train is. It’s a literal 5-star hotel on rails. The décor is divine, the food and drink are out of this world, and the service is like no other. Seriously, nothing is too much trouble for the professional dedicated crew onboard.

This trip will take you throughout many of Scotland’s most historic whisky sites, with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society at the helm. You know you’re in the best possible hands as they’re the most prestigious on the planet.

Day one begins in Edinburgh, while the final day of your journey will take you to Rothiemurchus Estate in the stunning Cairngorms National Park. Here you can enjoy a variety of outdoor pursuits and activities before a private VIP tour of the Tullibardine Distillery.

During your trip, you’ll also get to visit the Tomatin Distillery, along with the Glenmorangie Distillery. There’s also private nosings and tastings, including one overseen by Charles Maclean, whom The Times referred to as ‘Scotland’s Leading Whisky Expert’.

The Whisky Line – Keith & Dufftown Railway

Finally, if you want a simple, yet relaxing trip around some of Scotland’s most prestigious highlands, without spending a fortune, and several nights onboard a train, a trip through The Whisky Line on the Keith & Dufftown Railway is perfect.

The most northerly heritage railway in all of Scotland, it also happens to be one of the most scenic. Here you’ll travel through more than 11 miles of breathtaking scenery between the towns of Dufftown, the world’s malt whisky capital, and historic Keith. On this trip, you can visit the Glenfiddich Distillery, and marvel in awe at the Glenfiddich viaduct before making your way along to banks of Loch Park to Drummuir Castle – Diageo’s Speyside home of Scotch whisky.

At around 38 minutes in length, this trip isn’t so much about visiting whisky distilleries, although you still can at Glenfiddich, but rather, it’s about taking in Scotland’s whisky country and the amazing views and wildlife that the region has to offer. Passengers are able to hop on and off at any of the three stations along the way.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way of taking in the scenery in the heart of Speyside, this is the perfect trip for you. It will also be much kinder to your wallet than the previous two tours.
