“Fresh apples, sweet honey and soft oak balanced by bitter orange pith, spice, fresh crisp apples and citrus. Smoky fine oak finish. Naturally sweet; divine”.Ā
– The IWSC

“This release from the much-lauded GreatDrams ā€” an independent bottler in the UK ā€” is another winner. The Islay whisky in this case was aged in ex-bourbon casks before making its way to the GreatDrams blendery where it was bottled as-is.Ā GreatDrams is always killing it in the bottling space. Their releases are dialed-in and killer barrel picks from across the U.K. that never fails to wow. This is worth tracking down”.

Is this one of the best whiskies in the world? I mean, Iā€™m biased, so itā€™s not really my place to say. What I will say however, is the fact that those shiny gold medal awards and stellar writeups that this malt whisky has received are pretty compellingā€¦

In all seriousness, this is indeed one of the finest whiskies ever made. It is an award winning, single cask, single malt whisky from Islay, that has received numerous prestigious awards over the years. As an example, it picked up a Double Gold Medal at the WSC (World Spirits Competition) and was awarded a near-perfect 98/100 by the IWSC, who gave this gorgeous spirit their Gold Outstanding Medal ā€“ their most prestigious award.

Hailing from the mystical, picturesque, weathered island of Islay, this is a great dram that really represents its roots and origins. Islay itself has a mystique surrounding it. Its aura is almost magical and it wouldnā€™t look out of place in a fantasy epic. The distillery, located on the Islay coast, overlooks the stunning clear blue waters below. The coastal influences really help to make this whisky what it is.

For those who enjoy a fine peated whisky, this will surely appeal. In the art of whisky distilling, those peaty notes you get from a peated whisky are at their most potent and pungent in the spiritā€™s youth. As the whisky ages, the peat notes become fainter and fainter as more and more influences from the wood of the cask it is aged in are imparted. We wanted peat for this one, which is why we opted to bottle at 7 years of age ā€“ for the power of peat!

Matured in first fill bourbon barrels and packed full of character and flavour, this is a non-chill filtered single cask, single malt whisky that is nearly too good to drink. Just one look at this gorgeous amber honey coloured whisky lets you know youā€™re in for a treat, and things only get better. On the nose, you get an amazing aroma of peated whisky with plenty of notes youā€™d expect from a classic Islay. Inhale again however, and things get more complex. Charred oak notes enter the fray, as well as sweet vanilla pasta, ripe orchard fruits, and lime zest.

The taste itself is almost contradictory of itself, in that you get strong peated, smoky, even earthy notes with a touch of bitter orange peel, tied together beautifully with flavours of vanilla, smooth crisp apples, citrus fruits, and a welcoming touch of chocolate too.

The finish offers the perfect balance of sweet, fruity, and smoky, with heaps of character. You get the peat, charred smoky oak notes, and a smooth, divine, naturally sweet finish. This is one of the best single cask, single malt whisky products weā€™ve ever encountered, and considering our line of work, that really is saying something.
