This cask has been matured for its entire maturation at the English Whisky Co. in Norfolk, England. Initially in an American oak ex-Bourbon barrel for four years, this whisky was then filled into a first fill Pedro Ximénez cask for three years for its finish, or second maturation.

Here we have a single malt whisky that does not come from a Scottish distillery, but rather, an English one. The English Whisky Co in Norfolk to be precise. Opened in 2006, the Nelstrop family have done wonders for this distillery and the history of the area. It was the first new distillery in England for over 120 years! All the yeast, water, and barley used to produce spirits at the distillery are 100% English grain to grass.

Norfolk is home to many incredible things – gorgeous countryside, as well of Alan Partridge of course. Ah-ha! That isn’t all however, as it is also home to this wonderfully smooth aged whisky, matured in bourbon barrels and sherry casks for added depth and flavour.

Having spent the first four years of its life in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, this fantastic single malt whisky was then transferred into first-fill Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, where it was left to mature for a further 3 years. The end result is one of the finest craft spirits we’ve ever encountered here at GreatDrams. And that is saying a lot!

For a number of years now, we’ve been singing the praises of this distillery to all who would listen. This rich amber delight is testament of exactly why that is. The spirit is exquisite and is exactly what we look for in a rare cask series.

With so many amazing Scottish spirits out there, it’s rare to find an English single malt of such fine calibre. The English Whisky Co, however, have absolutely nailed it. When we visited the distillery and were fortunate enough to try a sample, we purchased the cask on the same day. It really was that special. It is our hope that this will be the first of many of casks we release from non-traditional, modern distilleries, for those looking for something a little different from a malt whisky.

Without giving too much away, this single malt offers an amazingly fruity aroma on the nose, with heaps of fruit and raisin flavour that you would expect from a sherry cask finish. There are notes of stewed fruits, raisins, sherry, and a whisper of winter spice. Enjoyed neat, this dram is an amazing sipper.
