Glen Moray Fired Oak Cask 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky Review

let’s begin

Taking inspiration from Whisky makers across the water, Glen Moray Fired Oak is an homage to Bourbon and it’s recent rise in popularity.

Why Bourbon?

Well, simply because Bourbon is a great category of Whisky and it has become massively popular in recent years, coinciding with the rise in popularity of Scotch.

So why not make a Scotch with all the best bits of Bourbon?

The flavours of Bourbon are sweet and spicy, with lots of oak notes as well.  They are the perfect complement to Scotch.

While the vast majority of Scotches are already matured in part or in Bourbon casks, this dram has been matured in ex-Bourbon and finished in heavily charred American oak casks, to really bring out the flavours.

Master Distiller at Glen Moray, Graham Coull says: “Fired Oak is all about enhancing flavours rather than adding different character. The Virgin Oak intensifies the existing vanilla and spice flavours which have come from the ex-Bourbon barrels.

“Two elements are key – quality of cask and timing, both are crucial to obtaining just the right flavour infusion. To create a balance I have selected Virgin Oak casks with differing lengths of finish to ensure that the final whisky is consistent.”

The end product of this maturing process is brilliant. It is brimming over with sweet and spicy Bourbon notes.

The nose opens with malted grains, smooth caramel and exotic fruits. it has a lovely subtle citrus tag, with hints of oranges a lemons.

Vanilla, oak wood and caramel really burst out, with lots of definition and a slightly smoky note.

The palate is big and bold, with tart summer berries, caramel, treacle, cinnamon and nutmeg spice, and a lovely hint of sweet nuts.

The toasty, charred smoke is also there and really enhances the caramel. oak wood grows into smooth vanilla and the citrus fruits come through to add a little zest.

Sweetness is plentiful, really filling the palate. It is rich and elegant, with lots of depth to it, especially from the oak flavours.

The finish is filled with more smoke and oak wood. Hints of caramel linger on, with a lasting note of vanilla.

This is a brilliant malt and the Bourbon influence is more than evident. If you’re looking for a dram that really captures the nature of a good Bourbon, then look no further.
